Here’s the thing about routers and modems: Even if you have the very best speed package from your local ISP, it’s still at the mercy of what the router and modem are capable of supporting.

This means you can sign up for the most expensive internet package offering the fastest download and upload speeds, but if your hardware can’t handle it, you’re not going to receive the level of speed you thought you were going to get.

If you’re looking for the highest speeds and wireless range, and want to take full advantage of your high-speed internet plan, the Netgear Nighthawk AC3200 C7800 Router and Modem Combo is easily the best way to do so. This combo is not only built for the highest speeds now, but also but to leverage further improvements to ISP speeds down the road.

The result is a router and modem combo that outperforms many conventional two-piece modem and router setups, while delivering the speeds and coverage needed to support high-bandwidth usage and numerous devices — without any drop-off in signal or overall performance.

Review

At first glance, the Netgear Nighthawk AC3200 C7800 Router and Modem Combo looks like your standard router, with a flat box and four antennas protruding out from the back. The device has a sleek look, and somewhat of a low profile despite its size and antennas.

Like most Netgear products, this device is compatible with most ISPs, such as Comcast, Cox, Spectrum, and more. Installation is as simple as plugging it into the cable connection, and either using a computer to complete the process, or calling your ISP to switch it on.

Now for the speed part. While many router modem combos can now accommodate maximum speeds of up to 600 Mbps, the Nighthawk AC3200 C7800 Router and Modem Combo can reach an astounding 2,000 Mbps for downloads. While many ISPs cannot even offer those speeds at the current time, they will eventually, and this device will be able to handle it.

This is further ensured by its use of DOCSIS 3.1 protocol instead of the usual 3.0. The 3.1 aspect means the Nighthawk AC3200 C7800 Router and Modem Combo will be able to handle anything over 1,000 Mbps, so even if your ISP doesn’t offer this just yet, or has too expensive of a plan for it currently, you can still use this router modem combo in the meantime, and take advantage of those speeds at a later date.

As for the range of this device, it’s just as impressive. The router capabilities allow the Wi-Fi signals to reach every corner of a 3,000 square foot house, and possible beyond that as well. It can also connect up to 45 devices at one time without sacrificing speed or connection quality.

For those who want to connect physical devices and computers to the modem, the device provides four separate ethernet ports, and also two USB 3.0 ports as well. This means you can have a direct connection for up to 6 different devices at one time, whether that’s a media player, storage device, printer, etc.

What We Like

  • This router and modem combo is certainly built for speed and signal strength, but it’s also meant to last for several years. This is important since many routers and modems can be outdated after a year or so. This device offers maximum performance from practically any ISP, but it’s designed to accommodate further increases in speeds, which are inevitable with every ISP. This makes it a great investment.

What We Don’t Like

  • Powerful router modem combos are bound to have a few drawbacks. In this case, the actual price is definitely a negative for many, and the power adapter is also overly bulky and takes up the space of two outlets, but that comes with the territory.
  • These negatives are far outweighed by the years of high-speeds and expansive signal coverage ahead of every buyer who purchases this device.

Buying Advice

Since this is a Netgear product, it should be compatible with most any cable-based internet from any ISP. If you’re worried that your ISP isn’t compatible, it’s recommended that you reach out to them to make sure before you go through with the purchase.

Another thing to keep in mind is although this router modem combo offers the most speed and signal strength out of most any product out there, it doesn’t mean you need it. If you live in a smaller home, have only a handful of devices, and don’t need high speeds for things like gaming, you can get by with something smaller and less expensive.

However, if you simply want a router modem that you can use for several years to come, and continue to receive the very best speeds as ISPs continue to progress and offer more speeds for cheaper packages, this device is the best way to do so. It will certainly pay for itself over time.

Verdict

Although the Netgear Nighthawk AC3200 C7800 Router and Modem Combo may not be for everyone, those with large homes, numerous devices, and the need for the very fastest speeds will definitely find this a worthwhile purchase in more ways than one. The upfront price tag may be high, but the performance and longevity offered from this combo are unmatched.
